California is rolling out some of the most significant firearm regulation changes in recent years, with new laws impacting storage, purchasing limits, handgun availability, and even parts and accessories. These changes will take effect throughout 2026, and understanding them now is critical for staying compliant.
Here’s a breakdown of what’s coming—and what it means for you.
Quick Hits:
Mandatory secure firearm storage laws are expanding statewide
New limits on how many firearms you can purchase per month
Certain handgun models will be restricted from sale
Additional rules now apply to firearm parts and reporting requirements
What’s Changing:
Beginning January 1, 2026, several new laws go into effect that directly impact firearm owners across California.
Secure storage requirements are expanding, meaning all firearms in a residence must now be locked or secured with a certified safety device whenever they are not under your immediate control. This removes previous flexibility around storage when children were not present.
New restrictions are also targeting firearm-related activity. Certain misdemeanor convictions—such as involvement in unlawful firearm manufacturing or distributing digital blueprints—can now result in a 10-year prohibition on owning or purchasing firearms.
Dealers will also face new limitations. Importing specific handguns classified as easily convertible to automatic fire will be prohibited, narrowing what can be sold to civilians.
Additionally, direct shipping of standalone firearm barrels to California residents will no longer be allowed. All barrel transfers must go through a licensed dealer.
Mid-Year Changes to Watch:
More updates roll out later in 2026, with several key dates to keep in mind.
Starting April 1, firearm purchases will be limited to no more than three per month.
By July 1, additional restrictions take effect, including a retail sales ban on certain semi-automatic handguns deemed easily convertible, expanded requirements for reporting lost or stolen firearms and parts, and mandatory annual training for firearm dealer employees.
The state is also moving forward with microstamping technology, with funding and development efforts required by mid-2026 ahead of broader requirements in the future.
What It Means for You:
Before 2026, it’s a good idea to review your current storage setup and ensure it meets new requirements. Planning purchases ahead of new monthly limits will also help avoid restrictions once they take effect.
Staying informed on which handgun models remain available and understanding updated rules around parts, transfers, and reporting will be important moving forward.
